What is the origin of Chinese mythology?
Historians have conjectured that much of Chinese mythology originated in the twelfth century B.C.E.. The myths and the legends were passed down orally for over a thousand years, before being written down in early books such as Shui Jing Zhu and Shan Hai Jing.
Chinese myths and legends date back to as early as the 12th century BCE where they began to be passed down orally. The earth's creation is attributed to the Daoist story of Yin, Yang, and Pangu.
In most cases these gods originated as historical persons who in life came to the assistance of their respective communities in times of need. It is supposed that, by deifying such persons and offering sacrifices to them, they will be moved to show similar solicitude after death.
This origin story comes from Chinese culture. It was first written down about 1,760 years ago, roughly 220 — 265 CE, yet it must have been told orally long before that. In the beginning was a huge egg containing chaos, a mixture of yin and yang — female-male, aggressive-passive, cold-hot, dark-light, and wet-dry.
Pangu is usually depicted as a primitive, hairy giant who has horns on his head. Pangu began creating the world: he separated yin from yang with a swing of his giant axe, creating the earth (murky yin) and the sky (clear yang).
The earliest forms of Greek civilization can be traced back to the Bronze Age, around 3000 BCE, while the Chinese civilization is believed to have originated around the same time or even earlier, during the Neolithic period. Both civilizations have rich, complex histories that have evolved over thousands of years.
Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism were the three main philosophies and religions of ancient China, which have individually and collectively influenced ancient and modern Chinese society.
Thus, the name Shangdi should be translated as "Highest Deity", but also has the implied meaning of "Primordial Deity" or "First Deity" in Classical Chinese. The deity preceded the title and the emperors of China were named after him in their role as Tianzi, the sons of Heaven.
Shangdi, (Chinese: “Lord-on-High”) ancient Chinese deity, the greatest ancestor and deity who controlled victory in battle, harvest, the fate of the capital, and the weather.
The Chinese idea of the universal God is expressed in different ways. There are many names of God from the different sources of Chinese tradition. The radical Chinese terms for the universal God are Tiān 天 and Shàngdì 上帝 (the "Highest Deity") or simply, Dì 帝 ("Deity").
What does Chinese mythology focus on?
Several common themes appear throughout much of Chinese mythology. Among the most significant are the creation of the world out of chaos or disorder, the importance of nature, and reverence for ancestors.
According to Chinese popular religion, there are three domains in the cosmos — Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld — and each domain is populated by a host of important gods and goddesses.
The oldest story in Chinese mythology is generally considered to be the myth of Pangu, who is said to have created the world. According to the myth, Pangu emerged from chaos and began to separate yin from yang, creating the earth and the sky.
There were over 200 gods in the Chinese pantheon whose names were recorded during and after the Shang Dynasty. The early gods, before Shangti, were spirits of a place known as Tudi Gong ("Lord of the Place" or "Earth God"). These were earth spirits who inhabited a specific place and only had power in that locale.
In Chinese philosophy, earth or soil (Chinese: 土; pinyin: tǔ), is the changing or central point of the matter. Earth is the third element in the Wu Xing cycle.
Though the ancient Chinese rank high among the world's oldest civilisations (2000 BC), the development of a united China came almost 1100 years after the ancient Egyptians (3100 BC). Mesopotamia (4000 BC), Egypt (3100 BC) and the Indus Valley civilisations (3300 BC) all significantly pre-date ancient China.
The oldest recorded civilization in the world is the Mesopotamia civilization. Overall, the 4 oldest civilizations of the world are Mesopotamia Civilization, Egyptian Civilization, Indus Valley Civilization, and Chinese Civilization.
The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the most well known Mesopotamian myths, and is often regarded as the oldest known piece of literature in the world.
Shang-di is Chinese history's most ancient supreme deity. This being has no imagery or written works and can only be contacted by higher-ups through divination. Shang-di has developed and transformed to meet the different stages of civilization. Taoism and Buddhism are two forms of religion central to worship in China.
In Taoist and Confucian thought, the supreme God and its order and the multiplicity of shen are identified as one and the same. In the Yizhuan, a commentary to the Yijing, it is written that "one yin and one yang are called the Tao ... the unfathomable change of yin and yang is called shen".
What is the biggest religion in the world?

Chinese people were forbidden to build or join monasteries, and Buddha was viewed as a foreign deity. It was not until the late Han dynasty that Buddhism started to attract Chinese converts and develop into “Han Buddhism” by incorporating concepts and practices from homegrown Chinese traditions.
The Jingjiao Documents (Chinese: 景教經典; pinyin: Jǐngjiào jīngdiǎn; also known as the Nestorian Documents or the Jesus Sutras) are a collection of Chinese language texts connected with the 7th-century mission of Alopen, a Church of the East bishop from Sassanian Mesopotamia, and the 8th-century monk Adam.
The Eight Immortals crossing the sea, from Myths and Legends of China. Clockwise in the boat starting from the stern: He Xian'gu, Han Xiang Zi, Lan Caihe, Li Tieguai, Lü Dongbin, Zhongli Quan, Cao Guojiu and outside the boat is Zhang Guo Lao.
Legend says that a long time ago in China there were immortal twins, one who brought harmony and the other, union. So artists made figurines showing the twin brothers, called ''He-He. '' They often were pictured and given to brides, because it was thought they brought a happy marriage.
