The Tesla Model Y brings what everyone loves about the Tesla brand to a practical compact crossover. This is essentially an SUV version of the Tesla Model 3 with similar styling inside and out, engaging performance, and excellent range. The significant differences are a standard dual-motor, AWD configuration, a roomier interior, and optional 3-row seating in the Model Y. For 2022, the Model Y has two trim levels available; Long Range and Performance. As you can glean from their names, the Long Range model has a longer range (up to 330 miles) and has the optional third row, while the Performance model has quicker acceleration and a higher top speed, but it also has a lower range, a higher price tag, and you can’t get the third row of seats. As of this writing, there aren’t any significant changes for the 2022 Tesla Model Y. However, Tesla regularly sends out over-the-air software updates, some big and some small.

Driving the Used 2022 Tesla Model Y
The Model Y has the engaging performance that’s become a hallmark of the Tesla brand. Its dual-motor electric drivetrain delivers instant torque to all four wheels resulting in quick acceleration with a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds in the Long Range model and just 3.5 seconds for the Performance model. On top of a higher top speed and a quicker 0-60 time, the Performance model adds performance brakes and a lowered suspension. It comes together to create an exciting driving experience without sacrificing its practicality. The Performance model still has an electric range of over 300 miles. While we like the exciting performance of the Model Y — even in the base trim — its ride is a bit firm for a vehicle considered a luxury SUV. If you prioritize a smooth, supple ride in a premium crossover, you may want to consider a hybrid luxury SUV like the Lexus RX Hybrid.
Interior Comfort
The interior of the Tesla Model Y has a sleek and minimalist design. It uses premium vegan simulated leather materials and a tasteful piece of wood trim spanning the dashboard. The centerpiece of the interior is a 15-inch infotainment system that controls just about everything. It has a bit of a learning curve, and we wish it came with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Seating space is pretty generous in the first and second rows. The seats are supportive and comfortable enough for long-distance cruising, and the cabin is quiet thanks to the electric powertrain. The available third row of seats in the Long Range model is awfully tight, but it’s good if you occasionally need extra seas in a pinch. The cargo area is generous in the 5-seat models, but the space is reduced if you add the optional third row. The maximum rear cargo capacity with the back seats folded down is 68 cubic feet, and there’s a small “frunk” in the front where the engine would typically be.
Exterior Styling
The styling of the Tesla Model Y is very similar to the Model 3 sedan but with an SUV body. It has sleek body lines, stylish wheel designs, and a sloping roofline. The Performance model has a sportier look with a lowered suspension, 21-inch wheels, and a carbon fiber rear spoiler. The size of the Tesla Model Y is on the bigger side of the compact SUV segment. It’s bigger than mainstream compact crossovers than the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, and it’s the same size as the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The standard Long Range trim of the Model Y has dual electric motors, all-wheel drive, and a range of up to 330 miles. Standard exterior features include 19-inch Gemini wheels, a panoramic glass roof, a power liftgate, and heated mirrors. On the inside, you’re treated to a vegan synthetic leather interior, heated front and rear seats, and automatic climate control. The standard infotainment system has a massive 15-inch screen that controls just about everything, including climate control, navigation, music, and more. It also has a 14-speaker audio system, 4 USB ports, and two wireless charging pads. The standard Autopilot semi-autonomous driver assistance system bundles adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, automatic steering, blind-spot monitoring, and more. This makes highway driving nearly effortless, but you still need to keep your hands on the steering wheel and your eyes on the road.
Factory Options
Upgrading to the Performance trim quickens the acceleration and raises the top speed, but it also increases the price tag. You also take a slight hit to the electric range, but it’s still an impressive range rating of 303 miles. Other upgrades to the Performance model include 21-inch Uberturbine wheels (a $2,000 option on the Long Range model), performance brakes, a lowered suspension, and aluminum alloy pedals. 3-row seating with room for up to seven people is a $3,000 option on the Long Range trim and unavailable for the Performance model. A few options available for both trims include a tow hitch ($1,000), a black and white 2-tone interior ($1,000), and Full Self-Driving Capability ($12,000), which adds a list of driver assistance features including Navigate on Autopilot, Auto Lane Change, Autopark, Summon, and more.
