Is a CD safer than a savings account?
If you're looking for a place to keep short-term savings, both certificates of deposit (CDs) and savings accounts are good options. Each offers safety and interest earnings. But while these two types of savings accounts share some features, they serve different purposes in your financial toolbox.
While it's unlikely, a certificate of deposit (CD) could lose money if you withdraw funds before you've earned enough interest to cover the penalty charged. Typically, CDs are safe time deposits that guarantee an interest rate for the term that you agree to keep money at a financial institution.
Market Crashes and CDs
Even if the market crashes, your CD is still safe. Your interest rate won't change, and your money is still insured. But, keep an eye on interest rates. After your CD term ends, you might find that new CDs have lower rates if the economy is still struggling.
A certificate of deposit (CD) account is an alternative to a traditional savings account. A CD account typically requires a higher balance than savings accounts, and your funds will usually remain on deposit for a fixed period of time (the “term” of the account).
Like other bank accounts, CDs are federally insured at financial institutions that are members of a federal deposit insurance agency. If a member bank or credit union fails, you're guaranteed to receive your money back, up to $250,000, by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.
Benefits of a CD
Your deposit will be protected from interest rate changes and you'll be able to calculate exactly how much your expected return will be. Good for planning ahead: Since the rate is set, you'll be able to plan more accurately.
CD rates may not be high enough to keep pace with inflation when consumer prices rise. Investing money in the stock market could generate much higher returns than CDs. CDs offer less liquidity than savings accounts, money market accounts, or checking accounts.
The biggest disadvantage of investing in CDs is that, unlike a traditional savings account, CDs aren't flexible. Once you decide on the term of the CD, whether it's six months or 18 months, it can't be changed after the account is funded.
If interest rates fall before the CD expires, the bank is out of luck and must give you the rate it quoted. If rates climb, you're stuck with the lower rate you agreed to when you opened the account. And if you take your money out before a CD matures, you'll pay a penalty -- typically three months of interest.
All types of deposits held at Wells Fargo Bank are covered by FDIC insurance including the following examples: Checking Accounts. Savings Accounts. Time Accounts (CDs)

If you have money in a checking, saving or other depository account, it is protected from financial downturns by the FDIC. Beyond that, investment products are more exposed to risk, but you can still take some steps to protect yourself. Here's what you need to know.
Savings accounts give you more flexibility to make withdrawals, but CDs offer fixed interest rates that can boost some savings if you're able to leave your money alone for a set time. The best place to deposit your cash generally depends on how long you're willing to leave it in your account.
CD vs.
A CD requires you to lock up your funds for a certain term, and it typically charges penalties if you withdraw your money early, but offers a higher rate. Savings accounts offer the ability to withdraw money anytime, but offer a lower rate.
Sometimes, the interest you earn on a CD can even be higher than what you earn on a high-yield savings account. But with a CD you need to keep your money locked into the account for a specified amount of time. This is known as the term length.
With higher APYs and possible interest rate cuts coming, certificates of deposit (CDs) could be worth adding to your personal finances in 2024. CDs are safe investments when you put your money in FDIC-insured banks (or NCUA-insured credit unions).
Top Nationwide Rate (APY) | Balance at Maturity | |
---|---|---|
6 months | 5.76% | $ 10,288 |
1 year | 6.18% | $ 10,618 |
18 months | 5.80% | $ 10,887 |
2 year | 5.60% | $ 11,151 |
All CDs in Schwab CD OneSource are offered by FDIC-insured banks. The amount insured by the FDIC is $250,000 per depositor per insured bank. Each CD you purchase from a different institution is FDIC-insured in aggregate based on ownership type at that bank.
Traditionally, in your typical ladder, five-year CDs have a higher yield than one-year CDs. But these days, you're likely to see a CD with a term of around six months to 18 months will likely have the highest yield in your ladder.
CDs offer higher interest rates than traditional savings accounts, guaranteed returns and a safe place to keep your money. But it can be costly to withdraw funds early, and CDs have less long-term earning potential than certain other investments.
Should I lock in a CD now or wait?
Waiting to open a CD could mean missing out on some stellar rates. Now, you can lock in high rates on both short-term and long-term CDs and, you can score some serious interest just by opting to deposit a larger lump sum into your CD. How much interest would I earn on a 1-year CD?
Minimum and maximum amounts for CD investments
You can expect a minimum CD opening deposit of at least $500 at most banks, though that could rise to $2,500 or more for certain accounts. For example, CIT's Jumbo CDs require a minimum balance of $100,000. CDs with higher minimums often pay higher APYs.
That all said, here's how much a $1,000 CD will make in a year, based on four possible interest rate scenarios: At 6.00%: $60 (for a total of $1,060 total after one year) At 5.75%: $57.50 (for a total of $1,057.50 total after one year)
