How many days in Bergen is enough? ›

Yes, 3 days are enough to explore Bergen and enjoy its top highlights and attractions. It will allow you to discover its quaint harbour, fjords and inlets, mountains, parks and museums. However, I would recommend staying longer if you plan to take day trips and explore the area beyond the city.

The best time to travel to Bergen is between May and August, as this is when the temperatures are the most pleasant and warm. Bergen has an average annual temperature of about 5ºC, the warmest month being July. The maximums between May and August range from 15ºC in May to 19ºC in July.

Exploring on foot is also easy in Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, and Tromsø, where most attractions, restaurants and hotels are within walking distance of the city centre. The sights, sounds and smells surround you when you're on foot.

It's only a 3,5-hour drive from Bergen to Sognefjord. You can take a bus ride (3,5 hours) from Bergen to Vik, with stops to admire the sights. Hardangerfjord is even closer to Bergen: only a 1,5-hour drive.

But, by far the biggest drawcard of Bergen is its nature. Although Oslo may top Bergen with its highly innovative buildings and history, Bergen is no doubt far more scenic than Oslo. Seven mountains surround Bergen (yes, seven), and the most easily visited is Fløyen, which is reachable by funicular.

Strandgaten is the traditional shopping street in the center of Bergen and home to some of the city's most famous and attractive retail premises.

Not to be missed this train ride... One of the better train routes to take in Europe - from Oslo to Bergen over the mountains. Better to sit on the left hand side of the car when heading to Bergen, but both sides will have a great photo opportunities. First class is a nice ride, but coach is ok too.
