The total sales volume of passenger cars in the Netherlands fluctuated mainly between 356,000 and 550,000 from 2010 to 2020. The highest volume was reached in 2011 with 555,920 volumes sold, the lowest in 2020 with just over 356,000. Most car registrations were petrol-fueled; however, the sales volume of electric fueled cars has increased in recent years, and in 2020, roughly 89,000 new electric passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands, up from 67,000 the previous year.

Popularity of German cars

With over 47,000 passenger cars sold, Volkswagen had the highest sales volume of passenger cars in the Netherlands in 2019. Skoda, Audi, and Seat, brands that occur in the top 20 leading brands, are part of the Volkswagen Group. The Volkswagen Polo is one of the leading car models in the country.

Tesla in the Netherlands

The Dutch sales volume of Tesla models had been on an upward trend up until 2019, when the American automaker sold nearly 31,000 vehicles in the Netherlands, up from just under 8,600 the previous year. In 2020, sales were again down to just under 9,000, and as of May 2021, only 433 units had been sold that year. Still, as of December 2020, the Tesla Model 3 was the leading registered fully electric passenger car in the Netherlands.
