History. The Kingdom of the Netherlands originated in the aftermath of French Emperor Napoleon I's defeat in 1815. In that year the Netherlands regained its independence from France under its First Empire, which had annexed its northern neighbour in 1810, as the Sovereign Principality of the United Netherlands.

The Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (Kingdom of the Netherlands) is made up of 4 countries: Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the Netherlands.

The first Kingdom – the Kingdom of Holland, with Napoleon's brother Louis as its King – lasted only four years (1806-1810).
