Dogs are good for the soul! (and for our health!) - Mission Ridge Animal Hospital (2024)

If you have been thinking about adopting a dog, here are some reasons to add to the PRO list!

It is not uncommon for me to be seen having a full blown conversation with my dog, as crazy as it sounds (and as many people may disagree) I think my dog understands what I need. I recently took a sick day at home with a nasty sinus headache and chest cold. I spent the majority of the day in bed and Hector did not leave my side. Each time I moved or kicked the blankets off, Hector got up to ‘check on me.’

The use of animals in therapy, senior lodges and other medical settings dates back to over 150 years. In more recent years it has been scientifically proven that petting a dog reduces blood pressure, that heart attack patients with animals live longer than those without and that interaction with dogs increases the level of the hormone, oxytocin. Oxytocin, also known as the love hormone, helps us with relaxation and trust.

In addition to those health benefits, dogs also provide motivation for leading an active lifestyle, emotional support as well as a source of happiness.
